Whether the vagaries of the first past the post electoral system or the very nature of the mixed economy lends itself to consensus politics which precludes any radical departures from the statist quo is unclear but it is undoubtedly true that we now effectively live in a One Party State!
The tyranny of consensus rules,the death of adversarial politics is the result which means the destruction of democracy itself. I do not have any truck with conspiracy theories normally but am prepared to make an exception here where I say there appears to be a consensus conspiracy in which all parties are now one party and are engaged in faux wars of the narcissism of small differences.
Ultimately however these are essentially issues of process and would not be insuperable if a radical change in the intellectual culture took place. This would lead to the death of Labour and Tory parties which is long overdue and can only take place after a philosophical revolutiona rather than an infrastructural one.
