The Dishonorable System

The honors system, a byword for corruption, cronyism and political malfeasance is now embroiled in the alleged tax avoidance practices of celebrities who it is claimed have been passed over for honors on the grounds that they may be engaging in 'aggressive tax avoidance schemes'.

Note how the perfectly legal practice of tax avoidance has been redefined as 'aggressive tax avoidance' thus completely eliminating the distinction between it and tax evasion. Whether there was any real distinction between the two practices is a moot point, the fact is it is a more aggressive approach towards any taxpayer who tries to reduce his or her tax burden which is growing ever greater by the year.

The comical part of this story is that HMR have been investigating any potential recipients of an honor concerned that if they have been attempting to thus reduce their tax payments and receive an honour this may bring their organization into disrepute! The mafia has its reputation to think about!
