When the greatest empire in human history folded up it's tents (unfortunate and inapposite metaphor) the natives reverted to type but now had big money to play with and decided instead of having free markets and liberalising their economies to turn their petty Thiefdoms into Oiligarchies and the rest is history grim bloody and ongoing but internationalised,exported to the West all the way to the blood flecked streets of London. Lamentable indeed but if you get to the core of it it is Godamn religion,mysticism married with arrant human peccancy,cynical manipulation of mass credulity bornof mysticism. This is not the way rational players behave but it is the way people's motivated by faith pretty much always behave.
Izlam could have chosen to embrace modernity and civilization but it went the way of all medieval mystical theocracies mired in intellectual stasis and created a morribund continent riven by factional religious mania and an internicine nihiistic death wish.
