(If anyone can explain why a great big gap is left at the bottom of my posts I would be grateful.It should and very often does adjust itself to my short comments and only a small gap is left at the bottom - not a yawning chasm!)

Maybe you first write your comments in a texteditor and you copy it in your posts? Just try to position your mouse at the end of the text after you have entered it into the text space of your new post, and press the 'Delete' knob. This should delete any hard returns which may account for the vast spaces at the end of your posts.
